The Museum was founded on March 9, 2004 with the mission statement "Let Chiayi citizens care about Chiayi.&" As the only municipal museum in Chiayi, the Museum exhibits the city's people, cultures, places, products, and scenery.
The Museum’s establishment can be traced back to the donation of 2,005 fossils from the lifelong collection of Mr. Wenji Xue, a resident of Chiayi City. The Museum's exhibitions covered the three themes of "geology, fossils, and art" in Chiayi, depicting the cultural characteristics of the city's natural landscape and humanities.
In response to times changes and social development, the Museum had been closed for renovation since September 3, 2018, and reopened on January 23, 2021, as the new position, “the museum of the city” with the new extended mission statement, “Let Chiayi citizens care about Chiayi, and let outlanders explore Chiayi city.” In a way that echoes and reinterprets the Museum’s primary purpose, it emphasizes "Chiayi City" and "Local Characteristics of Chiayi City" along with the history of the city.
By promoting, displaying, collecting, studying and marketing Chiayi City's local culture and characteristics, we work to improve the Museum's professionalism, build a sustainable management mechanism for the Chiayi City Museum, give the citizens the sense that the Chiayi Municipal Museum is theirs, and make a museum of Chiayi City citizens.
